This is mostly about 2 things that most people overlook. But first I will talk about obvious ones. If you smoke, then you can stop smoking and add years to your life. As far as diet, Dr Oz says to eat foods without an ingredient list. So he is saying to avoid processed foods.
It is better to eat foods that are organic and grown without chemicals and pesticides. Organic is the only way to be sure that your food is not genetically modified (GM). This will help with anti-aging.
Exercise will help you live longer and avoid the main causes of death in the United States. They are heart attacks, cancer and strokes. Also exercise helps to keep you from getting overweight. Being overweight shortens your life span. Stress also shortens your life span so it is good to do things that reduce stress.
Vitamin D
In 2007 Time magazine recognized vitamin D as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of the year. On November 30, 2010, the U.S. Institute of Medicine tripled the RDA of vitamin D. To get all the benefits, the important thing is to make sure that you are getting enough of it.
You can go to a doctor and get your blood level checked. Also you can take 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily without any concern of getting too much of it. A study shows that enough vitamin D (or lifeguard levels of vitamin D) can reduce non-skin cancers by 77%.
Also some experts believe that enough vitamin D can virtually eradicate breast cancer. It has also been shown to reduce heart attacks and strokes significantly. The studies show that if you cannot get enough of it from the sun, then you can take supplements of it that work almost as well.
Studies with vitamin D show that it can help with many different things like diabetes, arthritis, autoimmune problems and can greatly reduce colds and flu. So getting enough vitamin D can add more than 10 years to your life span. Sunlight is free and vitamin D supplements are very inexpensive.
Foods have very little vitamin D. The sunlight needs to be bright enough and during the middle of the day to get enough vitamin D from sunlight. You cannot get too much vitamin D from sunlight but you can get too much from taking supplements. To be on the safe side do not take more that 4,000 IU a day unless your doctor instructs you to.
Cutting Salt Intake
WebMD has an article saying that cutting your intake of salt can be as effective for heart health or cardiovascular health as quitting smoking. People need some sodium but too much of any mineral can kill you. Foods have much less than 1% sodium or any mineral. Although foods have a lot more potassium than sodium in them.
But salt is not a food. It is a rock or mineral. It is 40% sodium. So a teaspoon of salt can give you more sodium than from over 100 pounds of food. So this is way too much sodium. If you were to eat iron ore, then you would be getting too much iron. The same would apply to grinding down an iron nail and consuming it.
Excess sodium from salt has been linked to high blood pressure. In the U.S. 40% of the people over 40 years old have high blood pressure. Even if someone does not have high blood pressure, consuming a lot of sodium has been shown to increase the rate of heart attacks and strokes.
The AMA (American Medical Association) has been trying to get the FDA to make salt a regulated substance. If you look at labels of foods you will see that many have over 2,000 mg of sodium. The FDA says that people should consume more potassium and less sodium.
Every cell in the body has a sodium potassium pump. Consuming too little potassium makes it harder for the body to get rid of excess sodium. Consuming more potassium helps the body to get rid of excess sodium. So by following what the FDA says, increases the potassium-sodium ratio in the body.
In America most people have a diet with a potassium to sodium ratio of less than one. In some places in the world they have a 4 to 1 ratio of potassium to sodium. In those places less than 1% of the population have high blood pressure.
With all the salt that they put in foods then how do you reduce your intake of sodium? That brings us back to the beginning with what Dr Oz says. There are some frozen vegetables that just have the vegetable or vegetables on the label. Then there are some that have the vegetable and salt on the ingredients. The same with cans of beans. Eden brand has beans with no salt added.
There are lots of unprocessed foods to eat like fruits, vegetables, beans, sprouts, mushrooms, nuts and seeds that have no salt. You can even sprinkle some granulated kelp on foods. It is seaweed or a sea vegetable and has a salty taste since it comes from the sea. But it is also loaded with needed trace minerals like iodine. Also it is known to help in losing weight if you are overweight. Also kelp helps the body to deal with radiation. The iodine in it helps the thyroid gland.
