The 4 Major Body Types of Women



Since different body types store fat in different locations, identifying the type of body you have will help you understand better how you can lose weight.

Women can usually categorize their body type with one of the four major body shapes women have. The endocrine glands such as the adrenal, the thyroid, the pituitary, and the ovaries are found to affect to a large degree the shape a women's body assumes.

These are the glands that influence the main areas where women store fat in their bodies, and why women develop different body shapes. The four main body shapes that women have, are as follows:

1. The Apple Shape.

Women with the "Apple Shape" find that they have shapely legs and buttocks, but they tend to store a lot of fat around their bust, upper arms, and shoulders. These women will tend to have larger busts, broader shoulders, a wide waist, but will have narrow hips in relation to their shoulder size. They tend to store fat in the areas of their bust, arms and shoulders, and when they try to lose weight, these are the problem areas, the parts of their body they will find difficult to shape up.

2. The Rectangle Shape.

Women with rectangular shapes find that fat accumulates all over their body. These women will look wide, rather than chubby. Some have called this body type, the "Ruler Shape". Because these women seem to store fat more uniformly over their bodies, cardiovascular, and aerobic activities work the best for their weight loss programs. They don't need to focus on any particular area when exercising. However, strength training will help to tone and shape them in addition to raising their level of metabolism.

3. The Pear Shape.

Women with the "Pear Shape" are easy to spot. They have wider hips and buttocks with slimmer shoulders and bust. They tend to have slim arms with little fat accumulation in their upper body. Fat will accumulate most readily around their thighs, hips, and buttocks. Usually these women find it difficult to lose the fat that gets stored around the hip and thigh area. It is important when losing weight, for these women to focus on exercises that involve lots of lower body movement.

4. The Hourglass Shape.

The "Hourglass Shape" is the one most women desire. It is this body shape that is the most curvaceous. It is characterized by large shoulders and bust, narrow waist, wide hips, buttocks and thighs but in proportion to their shoulders. Women who have the hourglass shaped body type will more easily store fat around their thighs, buttocks, and hips as well as their arms, back, and sometimes their waist. Aerobic exercises and activities are important for women with this body shape, but so also is strength training to tone the muscles and increase the strength in their legs and arms.

Regardless of the body type or shape you have, it is possible to lose weight and eliminate the excess fat by following a healthy diet that contains lots of fresh vegetables and thus is high in fiber.

Fiber, absorbs the fat and cholesterol your body is trying to excrete throughout your bile. If you have little fiber in your diet, your intestines will re-absorb that fat and cholesterol. If you eat less fat, it will be easier to lose fat.
